Cyber Training at the NTEC Cyber Polygon

06 December 2024

In the period from 18 to 29 November 2024, the National Cyber Security Centre, which is part of the Operational and Analytical Centre under the President of the Republic of Belarus, within the framework of implementing the provisions of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 40 ‘On Cyber Security’, conducted cyber exercises with the participation of teams of cyber security centres of the banking sector, transport, energy, mobile communications of the country - more than 20 teams.

Cyber training is a critical element of a national cyber security strategy, helping to improve overall security and preparedness to respond to cyber incidents.

The cyber exercises were held at the cyber training facility of the National Traffic Exchange Centre. The involvement of the National Traffic Exchange Centre in this cyber exercise was a result of the successful completion of the development of its own CyberRing cyber training facility for companies. For this purpose, the National Traffic Exchange Centre has created a standard infrastructure simulating the real working conditions of an economically developed enterprise, in fact, a digital twin, on which they practice practical skills in responding to possible extreme situations - hacker attacks.

Оbjectives of Cyber Training:

  1. Practical skills and their evaluation in cyber incident investigations.
  2. Improved overall knowledge, skills and preparedness to respond to and assess cyber incidents.
  3. Improving coordination, communication and the level of collaboration among team members, as well as increasing participant cohesion, which is particularly important when responding to cyber incidents.

The Main Objectives of Cyber Training are to Practical Actions such as:

  • searching for traces of the attacker's activity and restoring the full chronology of events;
  • identifying the intruder's point of entry;
  • determination of the attack vectors used;
  • identification of all compromised hosts and services;
  • checking for information leakage and, if confirmed, identifying the data obtained by the attacker;
  • checking for malicious software and investigating it if detected;
  • developing recommendations to remediate detected vulnerabilities and cybersecurity threats and prevent re-compromise.

Based on the results of the cyber training, an assessment of the status of cyber training participants on cyber security issues within the framework of the functioning of the National Cyber Security System as a whole was formed. Summing up the results and awarding the teams with the best results took place on 3 December 2024 at the Marriot Hotel.
